William Niblo leased the Columbian Gardens (est. 1822) and opened two theatres (Sans Souci was the other). When it was destroyed by fire in 1846, Niblo retired--until popular demand enticed him to rebuild and reopen the venue in 1849. In 1852, Niblo retired and the Van Rensselaers built the Metropolitan Hotel, attached to the theatre. In 1866, they famously presented "The Black Crook," considered by many to be the first example of musical theatre. Replaced by a twelve-story office building in 1895.
